# How to record a Zoom meeting on Mac (host or participant)

Record a Zoom meeting on Mac with local or cloud recording, record when you are not the host, find saved files, and make long calls easier to watch.

There are three ways to record a Zoom meeting on a Mac. Which one you use depends on whether you’re the host, which Zoom plan you have, and what you plan to do with the recording afterwards.

> **First, a rule that applies to every method:** tell people you’re recording. Zoom shows a recording notice when you use its own recorder, but recording laws differ by country and state, and many require consent from everyone on the call. If in doubt, ask out loud and get a clear yes.

## Method 1: Zoom local recording (free and paid plans)

Local recording saves the meeting as a video file on your Mac.

1. Start or join the meeting in the **Zoom desktop app**. Local recording isn’t available in the browser.
2. Click **Record** in the meeting toolbar. If you only see **Record to the Cloud**, open the **More** menu and choose **Record on this Computer**.
3. Use **Pause** or **Stop** in the toolbar as needed.
4. When the meeting ends, Zoom converts the recording. Let it finish, because quitting early can leave you with an unplayable file.

By default, local recordings are saved to **Documents → Zoom**, in a folder named with the meeting date and topic. You can change this in **Zoom → Settings → Recording**.

## Method 2: Zoom cloud recording (paid plans)

On paid Zoom plans, the host can choose **Record to the Cloud**. The recording is processed on Zoom’s servers and appears in your Zoom web portal under **Recordings**. This is useful if you want a shareable link without uploading anything, or if your Mac is low on storage.

## How to record a Zoom meeting when you’re not the host

Zoom’s own recorder needs the host’s permission. Ask the host to allow it from the **Participants** panel (**More → Allow Record**). Once they do, the **Record** button works for you.

If the host can’t allow it, you can record your screen and system audio with a screen recorder. Zoom doesn’t stop this, but the recording notice won’t appear either, so asking for consent is entirely up to you. Get permission first.

## Method 3: Record with a screen recorder

A screen recorder makes sense when you want more control than Zoom gives you. For example, you might want to record only one window, keep your microphone on its own track, or edit the result before sending it.

1. Before the call, open your recorder and choose the Zoom window or the whole screen.
2. Turn on **system audio** so you capture the other participants, and turn on your **microphone** for your own voice. (Our guide on [screen recording with audio on Mac](https://jiffyrecord.com/blog/screen-record-mac-with-audio) explains the difference.)
3. Record a five-second test and play it back. Check that you can hear both sides.
4. Join the meeting and start recording.

With **JiffyRecord**, the screen, your microphone and system audio are saved as separate, editable sources. That makes it easy to turn down one loud participant, cut the first five minutes of small talk, or generate captions after the call.

## Turn a one-hour recording into something people will watch

Almost nobody rewatches a full meeting recording. A few minutes of editing makes it far more useful:

- **Cut the waiting room.** Trim the start and end of the call.
- **Remove dead air.** Long pauses add up quickly over an hour.
- **Add chapters** for each agenda item so viewers can jump to the part they need.
- **Add captions.** People skim captions faster than they watch video, and captions help anyone watching without sound.
- **Share a link, not a file.** A 600 MB attachment won’t make it through email. Upload the recording to shared storage and send the link.

## Common problems

**The Record button is greyed out.** You’re not the host and haven’t been given permission, or your administrator has turned recording off for your account.

**The recording has no audio from other people.** If you used a screen recorder, system audio wasn’t turned on. Zoom’s own recorder captures everyone automatically.

**I can’t find the file.** Open the **Meetings** tab in the Zoom app, select **Recorded**, and click **Open** to reveal the folder.
